Mental Health and Wellbeing in children and young people.

We know that 695,000 children and young people in the UK between the ages of 5-16 have a significant mental illness: 39,000 children are affected by anxiety, 18,900 are affected by ADHD, 10,800 are affected by depression, 68,100 are affected with a conduct disorder. 41,921 CYP were hospitalised (2014) for self-harm, and the rate of suicide in our CYP has hit an all-time high (Public Health England). It is estimated that at least three children in every classroom have a diagnosable mental health issue.

The Supporting Positive Mental Health and Wellbeing in Schools package has been designed to provide school staff with the practical tools and strategies they need to help improve the outcomes for CYP. It develops knowledge and understanding in the 5 key areas that influence positive mental health and wellbeing:

• Relationships,
• Emotional literacy,
• Sense of self,
• The brain learning and behaviour,
• Skills for learning.

It enables practioners to develop individual practice and support schools develop an environment and whole school practice that supports the development of positive foundations for mental health and wellbeing in their CYP.

The courses are ideal for those who work with children in primary, secondary or college settings, such as teachers, teaching assistants, ELSA’s, SENCO’s, behaviour support staff, school counsellors, wellbeing leads and school leaders.
